After Septuagesima, the Alleluia is entirely omitted, even on saints’ feasts. Votive Masses are permitted privately, but always without Gloria or Credo. The Church’s pedagogy is unmistakable: joy is not abolished, but disciplined, ordered toward the Paschal victory that lies beyond Lent.
Dominica I in Quadragesima (22 February)
I Class · Purpura · Missa: Invocabit me · Preface of Lent
The First Sunday of Lent raises the rank to First Class. The Introit Invocabit me, et ego exaudiam eum (“He shall call upon Me, and I will hear him”) promises divine assistance in combat. The Gospel (Matthew 4:1–11) presents Christ tempted in the wilderness. The forty days are now fully inaugurated.
This Sunday commemorates the Chair of St Peter at Antioch, represented by the liturgical feast Chair of Saint Peter at Antioch, alongside the Apostle Paul the Apostle. Authority and mission frame ascetic struggle. Lent is ecclesial. It is fought within the Body of Christ.
Monday 23 – Feria II infra Hebdomadam I in Quadragesima (Feria Major, Purple)
The Lenten ferial rhythm begins in earnest. The Mass Sicut óculi expresses penitential supplication and dependence upon divine mercy. As a major feria, it outranks lesser feasts. The Vigil of St Matthias is commemorated. The Tract continues in place of the Alleluia; the Preface of Lent is used.
Tuesday 24 – S. Matthiæ Apostoli (Duplex II Classis, Red)
The Feast of St Matthias interrupts the ferial progression with apostolic solemnity. The Mass Mihi autem honours the Apostle chosen to replace Judas (Acts 1). Red signifies martyrdom and apostolic witness. The Lenten Tract and Preface remain, maintaining the penitential framework even amid festal observance. The proper Last Gospel of the Lenten Feria is prescribed.
Wednesday 25 – Feria IV Quatuor Temporum Quadragesimæ (Ember Wednesday, Feria Major, Purple)
The first Ember Day of Lent emphasizes fasting, priestly prayer, and seasonal consecration. The Mass Reminíscere highlights covenant fidelity and repentance. Traditionally associated with ordinations, this day unites penance with ecclesial intercession. Additional orations (A cunctis; Pro vivis et mortuis) broaden the scope to the Church militant and suffering.
Thursday 26 – Feria V infra Hebdomadam I in Quadragesima (Feria Major, Purple)
The Mass Conféssio continues the theme of penitential return. As a major feria, its Lenten character prevails absolutely. The Tract replaces the Alleluia; the Preface of Lent frames the Eucharistic prayer. The additional collects again extend intercession to all the faithful.
Friday 27 – Feria Sexta Quatuor Temporum (Ember Friday, Feria Major, Purple)
A day of intensified fasting and recollection. The Mass De necessitátibus articulates human frailty and urgent reliance upon divine aid. Ember Fridays traditionally bore strong penitential observance and prayer for clergy. The Lenten structure remains unmitigated.
Saturday 28 – Sabbato Quatuor Temporum Quadragesimæ (Ember Saturday, Feria Major, Purple)
Historically one of the great ordination days of the Roman Church. The Mass Intret orátio emphasizes purification and perseverance. Ember Saturday combines extended lessons and solemn intercession in older usage. The faithful are invited into deeper participation in the Church’s sacrificial rhythm.
Sunday 29 – Dominica II in Quadragesima (II Classis, Purple)
The Second Sunday of Lent (Mass Reminíscere) traditionally proclaims the Transfiguration (Matthew 17), revealing the glory that lies beyond the Cross. The Creed is said; the Tract replaces the Alleluia. The liturgy balances penitential sobriety with eschatological hope, strengthening the faithful midway between desert struggle and Paschal light.
